The Philosophy of the Christian Curriculum: Teaching Composition

There are a number of good unconventional programs available for homeschooling families who want their children to pursue additional education from a Biblical perspective.  Some parents employ the concept of a "gap year" prior to deciding whether or not a child should attend college. The New Geneva Academy, the New Venture Lab, and the Center for Western Studies are excellent choices for laying a solid Biblical foundation for a variety of subjects. Those who go to college immediately after high school find wading through the misinformation and disinformation of college courses to be quite challenging.

Building a library of good, reliable reference materials can be beneficial in understanding the cultural war between Christianity and humanism at the college level. Some of the best resources for college level work are in the back of many homeschool magazines where DVDs are available to get down to the basics of a particular subject.  This is especially true for math, chemistry, and physics.  Many times these programs have been developed by homeschooling parents who are making the teaching they gave their children available to others.  In fact, at one homeschool convention recently, I was told by a vendor that a mother told him that when her son was having difficulty in biology because the college text was so confusing, he asked her to send him the Apologia text he had used in homeschooling.  Not only did he refer to that instead of the confusing text, he was tutoring others in his class, helping them understand the subject matter.

In the area of history, psychology, economics, and philosophy, the writings and lectures of R. J. Rushdoony are invaluable resources to ground students in the true fundamentals of subjects.  Prior to taking a college course, students can spend the summer acquainting themselves with the subject matter from the Biblical perspective and thus be on surer footing when it comes to revisionist history or propagandized learning taught in the classroom. The annual, week long West Coast Christian Worldview Conference held each summer also serves as an excellent preparation.

Successful homeschooled graduates must embrace the fact that regardless of where or how they study, they remain responsible to continue their education with the intent of better service to the Kingdom of Christ.
